What Is Barley Flakes?
Barley flakes provide one of the ways to enjoy the many nutritious and healthy benefits of barley! They can be eaten hot or cold, and are an amazing alternative to oat flakes, nuttier, slightly sweeter flavour and chewier texture. Yum!
To create barley flakes, whole grain barley is first de-hulled, then usually hydrated through steaming. Next it is gently. Briefly and precisely heated, before passing through a rolling mill and then cooled before packaging.
Why Should I Get Barley Flakes ?
This whole process stabilizes the grain, which means that the enzymes are neutralized to avoid oxidation and rancidity. The heating converts the starches to more simple sugars, which makes them more easily digested, but leaves the barley's vitamin and mineral content intact, so they stay healthy for you.
Add raisins, cranberries, or other dried fruits to the flakes as they are being cooked. The fruits will plump and help to sweeten the cereal. You can mix with dried fruits, nuts, and seeds for homemade granolas, mueslis, or trail mixes.
Instructions For Use:
Barley is a cereal grain with a chewy texture & mild, nutty flavour. Barley flakes need about 30 minutes to cook when simmering. When using in baked goods, some recipes will advise soaking them first for a short while to soften them. Try barley flakes as a porridge instead of oats.
Storage Instructions:
Store in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp.
