• Impulse flavoured varieties: chickpea & chia seed, hemp, black turtle bean and sea veg tempeh – different bases, different characters.

Slice it thin, marinate in soy sauce, garlic and smoked paprika, then pan-fry until golden – for stir-fries, sandwiches, bowls and a convincing plant-based bacon. A complete protein with fibre that tofu doesn't have.

Tempeh FAQs

What is tempeh? It's whole soya beans fermented and pressed into a firm cake. The fermentation binds the beans together and gives tempeh its nutty flavour, firm bite and high protein content.

What's the difference between tempeh and tofu? Both are soya based, but tofu is made from set soya milk, while tempeh is made from whole fermented beans. Tempeh is firmer, nuttier, higher in protein and fibre, and holds its shape better when cooked.

How do I cook it? Slice it thin, marinate it (soy sauce, garlic and smoked paprika is a good start) and pan-fry, bake or grill until golden. It works in stir-fries, bowls, sandwiches and as a plant-based bacon.

Is tempeh vegan and gluten-free? It's plant-based and a complete protein. Plain soya tempeh is usually gluten-free, but flavoured versions can contain other ingredients, so check the product page.
