Which oatmeal should I choose?

Cooking oatmeal
Coarser cuts need a longer, gentler simmer than rolled oats – start with double the quantity of liquid to oatmeal, stir well and top up as it thickens. If you are short on time, rolled porridge oats are ready in a few minutes.

Oatmeal FAQs
What's the difference between oatmeal and rolled oats? Oatmeal is made from oat groats that are cut or milled, which gives a chewier, fuller-bodied porridge with a deeper flavour. Rolled oats are steamed and pressed flat, so they cook faster and turn creamier.
What do pinhead, medium and fine mean? They're degrees of cut. Pinhead (coarse) is the chunkiest and chewiest with the longest cook, medium is the all-rounder, and fine is the smoothest, good for soft porridge and baking.
How do I cook pinhead oatmeal? It needs a longer, gentler simmer than rolled oats. Start with about double the liquid to oatmeal, stir well, and top up as it thickens. Soaking it overnight shortens the cooking time.
Is oatmeal gluten-free? Oats are naturally gluten-free but are usually cross-contaminated, so standard oatmeal isn't suitable for coeliacs. Choose certified gluten-free oats from the oats collection if you need it.
